By using a lean team and contract-based crew, we can provide professional-quality work more efficiently than traditional large production companies.

Based in Metro-Detroit, Michigan, we've worked with companies like Ford, General Motors, Quicken Loans, and many others, delivering award-winning content that drives results.

Meet The Team

John Coates

Co-Founder / Head of Production

John is a filmmaker from Detroit with over 8 years of video production experience. He has worked for major companies including Ford, General Motors, and Quicken Loans, bringing professional expertise to every project. While he wears many different hats, John is primarily a director of photography and gaffer, with extensive experience in G&E and camera department roles.

Steve Spencer

Co-Founder / Head of Visualization

Steve is a visual effects artist and filmmaker from Detroit with a business administration certificate. With previous experience at General Motors and Armstrong White, he has worked on projects for industry leaders including GM, Nissan, and Whirlpool. Steve's expertise in visual effects and post-production brings cutting-edge technical capabilities to Making Shapes' creative arsenal.
